Why "The Reality of Stars"?

These are just a few of many thoughts that either buzz over the surface of my mind or dive deep - either way these keep me curious and asking questions of myself and the world around me. Some of these pieces are from a Creative Writing Circle - The International Writing Club - Mark, Steve and I have been encouraging one another over some time. These pieces will be prefaced with IWC.

The Song

The song echoes though the ages.  Birthed before time, it joined in the chorus when all was spoken into existence.  It was witness to the first waves thundering into the first shore; it was there when the first shoot took root in the deep soil, the first flower burst forth in incredible colour and the first fruit exploded in taste.  As creation unfolded, so it unfolded, and as time stretched out through the eons, so it has grown and developed.

The song carries intent, a message, a desire to see its purpose accomplished.  Lilting, haunting, the melody is at times unbelievably complex, soaring through octaves impossibly high and incredibly low.  There seems to be no end to the optimism that it carries, and observers might think that nothing can ever prevent its climax – a tsunami that will not be stopped.

Time passes, and the song is a singular note, faintly echoing though the silence.  One wonders what happened to cull the momentum.   Standing solitary, the song is almost broken, and limps towards the future, hobbled by injustice, anguish, terrible decisions, cruelty.

But at that moment, when it seems that all hope is lost, and in the midst of despair and death, a singular action occurs that causes the song to swirl, twirl and spiral briefly upwards. Buoyed by this one almost intrusive ‘against the flow’ moment, and remembering again its purpose, it is suddenly caught up, a leaf in a swift mountain stream, swept out of it’s misery and mire, till again it soars and swoops, a swallow released from captivity, building and exploring once more the heights and depth of possibility.

I stand at the edge of tomorrow, gazing into an unknown future – the uncertainties of today swirl and curl around my toes, around my head, obscuring the panorama.  I lean towards inertia, the status quo, the as is, the easy.  But as I stand at the edge of time, the song is in me, and is around me, and is lifting me to be my absolute part in the song that continues towards its culmination.

What will I choose...

Today...
